La Bretagne est une entité historique, géographique et culturelle française (parfois appelée Bretagne historique pour la différencier de la région Bretagne). C'est une péninsule, à l'extrémité ouest de la France, située entre la Manche au nord, la mer Celtique et d'Iroise à l'ouest et le golfe de Gascogne au sud. À la fin de l'Empire romain, elle connaît un afflux de population due à l'immigration massive^, de Bretons insulaires dans une partie de l'ancienne Armorique celte. Ceux-ci créent un royaume au IX^e siècle, qui devient ensuite un duché dépendant du royaume de France. Réunie à la Couronne de France en 1532, elle intègre le Domaine royal et constitue du point de vue administratif un gouvernement militaire, une généralité (la généralité de Rennes), et, du point de vue douanier, une « province réputée étrangère » , jusqu'à sa disparition administrative en 1790 et sa division en cinq départements : Côtes-du-Nord, Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine, Loire-Inférieure et Morbihan. La Bretagne possède une identité forte, pourtant encore soumise à controverse.

Brittany (French: Bretagne [bʁətaɲ] ( listen); Breton: Breizh, pronounced [brɛjs]; Gallo: Bertaèyn) is a cultural region in the north-west of France. Previously a kingdom and then a duchy, Brittany was united to the Kingdom of France in 1532 as a province. Brittany has also been referred to as Less, Lesser or Little Britain (as opposed to Great Britain). Brittany is considered as one of the six Celtic nations.

Brittany occupies the northwest peninsula of continental Europe in northwest France. It is bordered by the English Channel to the north, the Celtic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Bay of Biscay to the south. Its land area is 34,023 km² (13,136 sq mi). The historical province of Brittany is divided into five departments: Finistère in the west, Côtes-d'Armor in the north, Ille-et-Vilaine in the north east, Loire-Atlantique in the south east and Morbihan in the south on the Bay of Biscay.
