Vatican City

Vatican City ⁱ/ˈvætɨkən ˈsɪti/, or Vatican City State, in Italian officially Stato della Città del Vaticano (pronounced [ˈstaːto della t͡ʃitˈta del vatiˈkaːno]), is a landlocked sovereign city-state whose territory consists of a walled enclave within the city of Rome. It has an area of approximately 44 hectares (110 acres), and a population of just over 800. This makes Vatican City the smallest internationally recognized independent state in the world by both area and population. The current Head of State and Government of the Vatican City State is His Holiness Pope Francis.

Le Vatican, officiellement État de la Cité du Vatican, en italien Vaticano et Stato della Città del Vaticano, est le support territorial du Saint-Siège enclavé dans la ville de Rome en Italie. En 2012, il compte 832 habitants sur une superficie totale de 0,44 km², ce qui en fait le plus petit État au monde.

Il a été créé le 11 février 1929 comme représentation temporelle du Saint-Siège, l'ensemble des institutions de l'Église catholique romaine, aux termes des accords du Latran signés par celui-ci, représenté par le cardinal Gasparri et l'Italie, représentée par Mussolini.

Siège de la papauté depuis Saint Pierre, centre officiel du christianisme depuis Constantin (IVe siècle), le Vatican est à la fois un important site archéologique du monde romain et le siège du monde catholique.
