En effet, O. Wagner était le maître d'oeuvre général, responsable de toutes les tâches architecturales liées à la construction du Stadtbahn (chemin de fer urbain) de Vienne.
En raison de la fonction impériale du Hofpavilion et de sa proximité avec le Palais de Schönbrunn, , sa morphologie et ses décors diffèrent de ceux des autres gares. Une coupole centrale lui apporte une note baroque.
Utilisé seulement à deux reprises par l'Empereur, la pavillon n'a jamais fait l'objet d'un contrat de sa part à l'architecte.
