Cartago was Costa Rica's original capital settled by Spanish conquistador Juan Vásques de Coronado in 1563. Eventually in 1572, the country's capital switched to San José after it received its nickname "The city of mud" from constant flooding. This Byzantine style church remains the national religious shrine of Costa Rica and the pilgrimage destination every August 2nd.
