This traffic light was merrilly swinging at the intersection of 7th Ave and W 56th St. Everything looks so different there; having the horizon filled with skyscrapers sets off something at the base of my brain, almost like a sense of being indoors. I'm sure if I lived there I'd get used to it, but I felt slightly off-balance all day.

Traffic lights, also known as traffic signals, traffic lamps, signal lights, robots in South Africa and, in the past, semaphores, are signalling devices positioned at road intersections, pedestrian crossings and other locations to control competing flows of traffic. Traffic lights were first installed in 1868 in London and are now used all over the world.
Traffic lights alternate the right of way accorded to road users by displaying lights of a standard color (red, yellow/amber, and green) following a universal color code. In the typical sequence of color phases:
