Groupe Auchan SA (French pronunciation: [oʃɑ̃]) is a French international retail group and multinational corporation headquartered in Croix, France. It is one of the world's principal distribution groups with a presence in 12 countries and 269,000 employees.
The company began when Gérard Mulliez opened his first self-service shop in Roubaix in the district of Hauts-Champs - pronounced the same as "Auchan".
Auchan has branches in France, and internationally in Italy, India, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, Poland, Hungary, Russia, China, Taiwan, Romania and Ukraine.
As of 2011
, Auchan had 639 hypermarkets and 2,412 supermarkets around the world.
A shopping cart (trolley, trundler, wagon, basket,) is a cart supplied by a shop, especially supermarkets, for use by customers inside the shop for transport of merchandise to the check-out counter during shopping. Customers can then also use the cart to transport their purchased goods to their cars.
In many places in the United States, customers are allowed to leave the carts in the parking lot, and store personnel will return the carts to the storage area. In many European and Canadian premises however, coin (or token) operated locking mechanisms are provided to encourage shoppers to return the carts to the correct location after use.
