RAMPARTS OF MOROCCO
Morocco's long and storied military history means that many towns are surrounded by ramparts that survive gloriously into the modern age. Some of the fortifications bear Portugese influences, while others take the form of the traditional kasbah, a kind of keep or citadel into which people could flee in times of civil unrest or attack. Today, these stunning works of architecture are appreciated as much for their aesthetic refinements as their formidable defensive capacities.
