Rivière Noire is a district of Mauritius on the western side of the island. Its name Rivière Noire translates to Black River. This region receives less rainfall than the others. The district has an area of 259 square kilometres (100 sq mi) and the population estimate was 76,627 as of 31 December 2010. It is the third largest District of Mauritius in area, but the smallest in terms of population. The district is mostly rural, it also include the western part of the city of Port Louis and western part of Quatre Bornes.
Mauritius i/məˈrɪʃəs/ (French: Île Maurice), officially the Republic of Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) off the south east coast of the African continent. The country includes the islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues, 560 kilometres (350 mi) east of the principal island, the islands of Agaléga and the Saint Brandon. The islands of the Republic of Mauritius form part of the Mascarene Islands, which also include the neighbouring island of Réunion. The area of the country is 2040 km2, its capital is Port Louis.
